Virtuelle Akademie Nachhaltigkeit

The Virtual Academy for Sustainability (VAN) is a scientific institution at the University of Bremen. VAN develops interdisciplinary online courses on sustainability for higher education and supports universities in providing high quality, accessible digital learning opportunities. Our courses are designed as self paced learning formats that can be used across disciplines and study programmes, including for blended learning and independent study.

Within the RADAR AIM consortium, VAN brings strong expertise in online course development, instructional design, and digital implementation. Our main contribution focuses on creating concrete learning experiences that work in real university contexts and can be scaled across partner institutions.

In RADAR AIM, the University of Bremen co leads Work Package 4 (Adopt and Reflect) together with NOVA University Lisbon. In this role, we support the implementation, piloting, and evaluation of the modular learning units developed in Work Package 3. Building on our experience with sustainability education, we aim to contribute a clear implementation pathway through a stand alone online self learning course that combines responsible use of generative AI with a sustainability perspective. This format also allows partners to reuse individual units in their own contexts, including as stackable elements for micro credentials where relevant.

Through RADAR AIM, VAN aims to strengthen practical and responsible AI competencies in higher education and to connect the topic of generative AI with sustainability challenges that are relevant across disciplines.
